Its story
The line of redoubts protecting Erzurum from the east was the scene of fierce fighting during the Ottoman-Russian War of 1877–1878 (the '93 War'). On the night of 8 November 1877, when news that Russian units had captured the Aziziye Redoubt was announced from the minarets, the people of the city rushed to the redoubt with stones and sticks and the position was retaken. Nene Hatun, who took part in this resistance, became a symbol of courage for later generations; in 1955 she became the first person in Türkiye to be chosen 'Mother of the Year', and she died the same year and was buried beside the Aziziye Monument. The area was declared a historical national park in 2009. The visiting point is the Aziziye Redoubt, the monument and Nene Hatun's grave; the nearby Mecidiye Redoubt and other redoubts are also part of the park.
