Oltu Castle
Oltu, Erzurum
A restored castle on a rocky hill in the Oltu district center, overlooking the valley where the Oltu Stream forms, bearing traces of the Georgian, Seljuk and Ottoman periods.
Its story
The castle stands on a low but steep rocky hill controlling an important pass, at the point where the Narman and Sivri streams join to form the Oltu Stream. Its founding date is uncertain; 19th-century observations point to Georgian architecture and Georgian inscriptions. Used by the Byzantines, the Georgian Kingdom, the Seljuks and the Akkoyunlu, the castle was one of the important centers of the atabegs of Samtskhe before passing to Ottoman rule in the mid-16th century; it then became the administrative center of the Oltu sanjak. From the restored castle a wide view opens over the town and the valley. Oltu is the district where the Oltu stone that bears its name is mined.
