Lake Tortum
Uzundere, Erzurum
A natural barrier lake of about 8 km² formed by a landslide, stretching between steep mountain slopes; viewed with its calm reflections from the road along its shore.
Its story
The lake, which accumulated behind a natural barrier about 50 m high made of limestone blocks that blocked the Tortum Stream, is the product of a landslide that occurred in the 1700s. At an elevation of about 1,000 m, the lake covers an area of 8 km², its width varies between 100 m and 1 km, and its depth approaches 100 m. The southern part of the lake is a bird area where all four vulture species found in Türkiye have been observed. In summer its shores are used as recreation spots. As the Erzurum–Artvin road follows the western shore of the lake, it is possible to stop at various points and enjoy the view; the waters overflowing from the northern end of the lake form Tortum Waterfall.
