Its story
Today's village of Tortumkale is the original settlement that once bore the name Tortum; the old name of the district center is Nihah. Located in the historic Tao region, the castle dates from the medieval Georgian period and fell to the Ottomans in the mid-16th century. Built on a rocky hill, the structure consists of an inner and an outer castle; high but partly ruined walls, remains of buildings within the castle and a single-nave church south of the inner castle have survived. Different building materials show that the castle was repaired several times. The castle was registered as a cultural property to be protected in 1978. From the hilltop a wide view opens over the Tortum Stream valley.
