Its story
The monastery is in the village of Keçili, formerly called Niakomi, in the historic Tao region. The main church is estimated to have been built in the 9th century; one of the Georgian manuscripts found by villagers in 2012 in the monks' caves near the monastery has also been dated to this century. One of the tasks of the nearby Niakomi Castle is thought to have been to protect the monastery. In 1907 Ekvtime Takaishvili went up the valley from the confluence of the Salaçuri and Niakomi streams and documented the buildings; photographs taken that year show the monastery's former state. Long used as farmland and heavily dug by treasure hunters, the site, although one of the important monastic complexes of Tao-Klarjeti, is largely in ruins today.
