Its story
Kov Castle is within the boundaries of the village of Esenyurt, southeast of central Gümüşhane. According to sources, it was built as an outpost in the 14th century, in the time of the Emperor Alexios III Komnenos of Trebizond, to control the road against raids that might come from the direction of Bayburt. The castle stands on a rock rising some 130 meters above its surroundings, at an altitude of about 1,760 meters. The rectangular-plan structure, built of rubble stone, has an inner and an outer castle; the walls are about 1.5 meters thick, and sections such as a cistern can be made out inside. It was repaired in 2007. From the top of the rock, the surrounding valleys and mountain ranges are seen from a wide angle.
