Its story
The church dedicated to Mar Shalita (Mar Şalita) is in a valley in the village of Konak (Koçanis), about 18–22 km from central Hakkari. From about the 17th century to the early 20th century, the building was used as the patriarchal seat of the Assyrian (Nestorian) community of the Church of the East; after the community left the region, it was closed to worship. On the western part of the facade, near the roof, is an eight-line inscription written in the Syriac alphabet, and on the facade there are two circular sundials. The conservation problems of this building, notable for its plain, unpretentious stone architecture, have been the subject of academic studies. The provincial directorate of culture recommends the church together with the Berçelan Yaylası route. The last part of the road is a rough dirt road; as the building may not have been repaired, it is recommended to view it from outside.
