Its story
The caravanserai is in the Kervansaray neighborhood of the village of Harmandöven in central Iğdır, on the Batumi–Tabriz caravan route, a branch of the Silk Road. Its construction is attributed to Şerafeddin Ejder Bey, the emir of Sürmeli; historical sources give dates ranging from the Seljuk period to the 14th century. The building, with five semi-cylindrical buttress towers on each of its long sides, stands out for its many different kinds of stonework. Through the portal, about 2.2 meters wide, you enter a square-plan hall covered by vaults resting on triangular pendentives at the corners. One of the important stops on the caravan route in the region, the building bears witness to Iğdır's commercial history.
