Atatürk Cultural Center (AKM)
Beyoğlu, İstanbul
An opera, theater and concert complex on Taksim Square, rebuilt and opened in 2021.
Its story
The first building opened in 1969 as the İstanbul Palace of Culture; after a fire in 1970 it was repaired and renamed the Atatürk Cultural Center. Closed for a long time after 2008, the building was demolished and rebuilt to a design by Murat Tabanlıoğlu, opening in 2021. The new AKM houses a large opera hall shaped like a red sphere, a theater hall, a cinema, a library and exhibition spaces. It is the main İstanbul stage of the State Opera and Ballet.
