Its story
Under the leadership of Osman Hamdi Bey, the museum opened to visitors in its current main building in 1891. The marble sarcophagus found in Sidon (Sayda) and known as the Alexander Sarcophagus, the Sarcophagus of the Mourning Women and the Treaty of Kadesh tablet are among the best-known pieces in the collection. The Tiled Kiosk (Çinili Köşk), built in 1472 in the reign of Mehmed the Conqueror, is one of the oldest surviving Ottoman civil buildings in İstanbul. After lengthy strengthening and restoration work, the complex was rearranged in stages; the main entrance was moved to the Gülhane Park side.
