Atik Valide Mosque and Complex
Üsküdar, İstanbul
A large complex on the hilltop of Üsküdar built by Mimar Sinan for Nurbanu Sultan, mother of Murad III.
Its story
The complex was built by Mimar Sinan between the late 1570s and the 1580s in the name of Nurbanu Sultan and is one of Sinan's major late works. It is a large ensemble consisting of a mosque, a madrasa, a Quran school (darülkurra), a hospital (darüşşifa), a public kitchen, a caravanserai and a hammam. The interior of the mosque stands out for the İznik tiles and hand-painted decoration on the mihrab wall. The hospital and caravanserai sections of the complex have gained new functions through restoration.
