Its story
The site was examined in the 1930s by the Swiss archaeologist Ernest Mamboury, but extensive excavations began only in 2009 with work led by Kocaeli University. The excavations uncovered building remains from the Hellenistic and Roman periods, two harbors known as the Great and Small Harbors, and traces of an ancient lighthouse now submerged in the lake. The finds show that the city was also an important trade and religious center in the Byzantine period. The site is an active excavation area and is not open for regular visits.
