Its story
Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (Ebu Eyyub el-Ensari) died before the walls of İstanbul during the Arab sieges of the 7th century. After the conquest, the location of his grave was identified, and in 1458 Mehmed the Conqueror built a complex consisting of a tomb and a mosque. When Ottoman sultans ascended the throne, they attended the sword-girding ceremony here. The present mosque was rebuilt in 1800, in the reign of Selim III; the historic cemeteries and tombs around it turn the area into an open-air museum.
