Its story
After being housed in different buildings over the centuries, the Patriarchate moved to its current site in Fener in the early 1600s. The Church of St. George (Aya Yorgi) at the center of the courtyard welcomes visitors with its carved wooden iconostasis, the patriarchal throne and holy relics. The main gate has been kept closed since Patriarch Gregory V was executed here in 1821, and visitors enter through a side door. The Patriarchate is the most important link in the Greek Orthodox heritage of the Fener neighborhood on the Golden Horn.
