Galata Mevlevi Lodge Museum (Galata Mevlevihanesi)
Beyoğlu, İstanbul
İstanbul's first Mevlevi lodge; a complex that keeps Mevlevi culture alive with its semahane, tombs and museum.
Its story
The Galata Mevlevihanesi was founded in 1491 at Kulekapısı and was the city's first Mevlevi lodge. The ensemble, which developed around the octagonal semahane (ceremonial hall), dervish cells, kitchen and graveyard, took on its current 18th–19th-century appearance through fires and repairs. The graveyard holds the tombs of the poet Şeyh Galib and Humbaracı Ahmed Paşa. Today the building, visited as a museum, displays Mevlevi musical instruments, garments and manuscripts; the sema ceremony is performed on certain days.
