Its story
Known as Halki in the Byzantine period, the island takes its name from the dip between its two hills, which resembles a saddlebag (heybe). On the island are the 19th-century Theological School (Ruhban Okulu), the Naval Academy buildings and many wooden mansions. Its pine-covered hills are suitable for hiking and cycling routes. The house of Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar is also preserved on the island as a house museum.
