Kandilli Observatory

Türkiye's earthquake monitoring center, founded in 1911; an observatory museum in its historic hilltop buildings.
Its story
The observatory moved to Kandilli Hill in 1911 as the successor of the Rasathane-i Amire (Imperial Observatory), founded in 1868 in the Ottoman period. The institution, which makes meteorological, astronomical and geophysical observations, has been part of Boğaziçi University since 1982. It is known for monitoring earthquakes in Türkiye and reporting them to the public. The museum in its historic buildings displays old telescopes, seismographs and measuring instruments; contacting the institution in advance is recommended for visits.
