Sokullu Mehmet Paşa Mosque (Büyükçekmece)
Büyükçekmece, İstanbul
The remains of a Mimar Sinan mosque at the head of the Kanuni Bridge, notable for its minaret carved from a single piece of stone.
Its story
The mosque was built by Mimar Sinan in 1567 for Grand Vizier Sokollu Mehmed Paşa, at the same time as the construction of the Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Bridge. Of the building, also known as the Köprübaşı (Bridgehead) Mosque, the minaret, a passage and a low wall survive. The minaret, carved from a single block of stone, stands out as an example without parallel in Türkiye. The remains are part of the historic area at the head of the bridge, together with the Kurşunlu Han opposite and the Kanuni Fountain beside it.
