Tekfur Palace Museum
Fatih, İstanbul
A museum adjoining the land walls, a rare surviving example of Byzantine palace architecture, displaying works from Ottoman tile workshops.
Its story
The building was built in the 13th–14th centuries as part of the Blachernae Palace complex and, with its facade of colored stone and brick masonry, is a rare example of Late Byzantine civil architecture. In the Ottoman period it was used as a menagerie, a glass workshop and, in the 18th century, as the Tekfur Palace tile workshops that continued the İznik tradition. It opened as a museum in 2019 after restoration by the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality. The exhibition presents tile and ceramic fragments found in excavations in the area and the history of the building.
