Its story
The lake, also known as Durusu or Terkos Lake, is a lagoon formed when a bay on the Black Sea was cut off from the sea by dunes built up by the waves. With a water surface of about 39 square kilometers, it is one of İstanbul's largest freshwater sources and has supplied the city with water since the late 19th century. It is mentioned under the name Delkos in the work of the ancient author Athenaeus. The dunes and reed beds between the lake and the sea offer a rich habitat for birdwatching.
