Zeyrek Mosque (Pantokrator)
Fatih, İstanbul
A mosque converted from the 12th-century Pantokrator Monastery, made up of three Byzantine churches joined together.
Its story
The building comprises the churches of the Pantokrator Monastery, founded in the early 12th century by Emperor John II Komnenos and his wife Irene. This group of buildings, consisting of the north and south churches and the imperial funerary chapel between them, was the burial place of the Komnenos dynasty. After the conquest it was converted into a mosque and came to be known by the name of its first teacher, Molla Zeyrek. It reopened for worship after a lengthy restoration; overlooking the Golden Horn, it is associated with the neighborhood of wooden houses around it.
