Ayasuluk Hill and Castle
Selçuk, İzmir
A mound overlooking Selçuk, surrounded by Byzantine and Turkish-period walls, bearing traces of settlement even older than Ephesus.
Its story
Excavations on Ayasuluk Hill have shown that settlement in the area goes back to the Neolithic period and that the hill is older than Ephesus. The summit is surrounded by walls built in the Byzantine period and repaired in the Aydınoğulları and Ottoman periods. Inside the castle are cisterns, a small mosque and building foundations. Together with the Basilica of St. John, the hill is part of the Ephesus UNESCO World Heritage site.
