Belevi Mausoleum
Selçuk, İzmir
One of the great monumental tombs of the Hellenistic period, 14 km from Ephesus, reminiscent of the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus.
Its story
The mausoleum at Belevi was built by carving out the rocky core of a hill and cladding it with cut stone. The structure is thought to have been begun for one of the Macedonian generals, Antigonus or Lysimachus, and later used as the tomb of the Seleucid King Antiochus II. The sarcophagus from the burial chamber is now in the Ephesus Museum. Together with the nearby tumulus, it shows the region's importance in the Hellenistic period.
