Pergamon Amphitheater
Bergama, İzmir
The remains of a Roman amphitheater set on both slopes of a stream, where water is thought to have been channeled beneath the arena.
Its story
Located in the valley between the Acropolis and the Asklepion, the amphitheater was built in the Roman period for gladiator fights and animal shows. The fact that the building was built over a stream has given rise to the view that the arena could at times be filled with water. Today the vaulted substructures and traces of the seating tiers can be seen. Looking down from the Acropolis, the building's oval shape can be made out.
