Çeşme Castle
Çeşme, İzmir
A harbor castle built in 1508 in the reign of Bayezid II, housing the Çeşme Museum.
Its story
The castle was built in the early 16th century, in the reign of Bayezid II, to protect the coast and harbor opposite the island of Chios (Sakız). With its moated walls and bastions, it is a well-preserved example of Ottoman coastal fortresses. The Çeşme Museum inside has artifacts from excavations in the area and sections on the 1770 Naval Battle of Çeşme. In front of the castle are a statue of Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Paşa and a caravanserai.
