Hisar Mosque
Konak, İzmir
Built in the 16th century, one of İzmir's largest and most ornate historic mosques.
Its story
Hisar Mosque was commissioned in 1597 by Aydınlı Yakup Bey. It takes its name from the small castle (hisar) that once guarded the inner harbor and no longer exists. The painted decoration, wooden gallery and colored marble ornamentation inside are among the richest examples of mosque architecture in the region. The ablution fountain in its courtyard and the coffeehouses around it form the busiest corner of Kemeraltı.
