İsa Bey Mosque
Selçuk, İzmir
A building from the Aydınoğulları period, one of the important examples of Anatolian beylik architecture with its courtyard plan and marble facade.
Its story
The mosque was commissioned in the late 14th century by Aydınoğlu İsa Bey at the foot of Ayasuluk Hill. The colored marble work and crown portal on its west facade reflect the style of the transition period between the Seljuks and the Ottomans. Ancient columns and reused stones brought from the ruins of Ephesus were used in the building. With its large arcaded courtyard and minaret base, it can be visited on foot between the Basilica of St. John and the Artemision.
