History and archaeology / Castle
Kadifekale
Konak, İzmir
The castle of the city founded in the time of Alexander the Great, at the summit of Pagos Hill; one of the widest views over the gulf.
Its story
According to tradition, Alexander the Great had the city moved here after a dream he had on Pagos Hill. The castle was built in the Hellenistic period in the time of Lysimachus and repaired in the later Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman periods. Inside the walls are a cistern and tea gardens. At the foot of the hill, excavation work continues at the 2nd-century Theater of Smyrna. The view of the gulf and the city is at its finest at sunset.
