Karantina Island
Urla, İzmir
An island linked to Urla İskele by a causeway, used to fight epidemics in the Ottoman period.
Its story
The island's name comes from the quarantine facilities established in 1865, which used advanced technology for their time. The facilities were used intensively between 1865–1869 and continued to operate until the end of the First World War. In antiquity the island was also important as the place where the people of Klazomenai took refuge during the Persian threat. It is linked to the mainland by an artificial causeway; as the buildings on the island are used by public institutions, access inside is restricted.
