Kızlarağası Han
Konak, İzmir
Kemeraltı's most famous Ottoman han, built in 1744, with a two-story arcaded courtyard.
Its story
The han was commissioned in 1744 by Hacı Beşir Ağa, who served as Chief Harem Eunuch (Darüssaade ağası) under Ahmed III and Mahmud I. Its two-story courtyard plan resembles the hans of Istanbul; it is one of the most impressive han buildings in the city to have survived. Following restoration, its courtyard is filled with cafés and its ground- and upper-floor rooms with handicraft and souvenir shops. Right next to Hisar Mosque, it is at the heart of a tour of Kemeraltı.
