Larisa Ancient City
Menemen, İzmir
One of the oldest Aeolian cities of the Aegean, built on a hill commanding the Gediz valley.
Its story
Larisa is on a hill overlooking the Gediz River plain near the Buruncuk neighborhood of Menemen. Its name derives from a word in the Anatolian languages meaning 'citadel, walled place'. Archaic-period palace and wall remains have been found at the settlement, counted among the twelve Aeolian cities. In the early 20th century Swedish and German archaeologists excavated here.
