History and archaeology / Archaeological site
Panaztepe
Menemen, İzmir
An archaeological site in the Gediz delta, thought to have been a harbor in the Bronze Age and possibly mentioned in Hittite sources as Paniişşa.
Its story
Panaztepe is on a natural hill rising from the delta plain west of Menemen. In prehistoric times it is thought to have been a harbor on an island or peninsula north of the Gulf of İzmir; today the alluvium of the Gediz has pushed the coast kilometers away. Excavations have uncovered finds and graves from the Early, Middle and Late Bronze Age, with Mycenaean influence. Some of the finds are displayed in the İzmir Archaeology Museum.
