Agora of Smyrna
Konak, İzmir
In the city center, one of the best-preserved agoras in the world, with a Roman-period basilica and underground galleries.
Its story
The Agora was the public square of new Smyrna, which moved to the foot of Kadifekale in the Hellenistic period. After the earthquake of AD 178 it was rebuilt with the support of Empress Faustina. The vaulted basement of the basilica on its north side stands out for its running water and the ancient writings (graffiti) on its walls. Some of the sculptures and artifacts uncovered in the excavations are displayed in the exhibition area on site.
