Its story
The earth- and rock-fill dam, whose construction was begun by DSİ (State Hydraulic Works) in 1986, is on the Tahtalı Çayı and has supplied drinking water to İzmir since August 27, 1997. Covering an area of about 23.5 km² at normal water level, the lake meets a significant part of the metropolitan districts' water needs. The old village of Bulgurca, which lay within the lake area, was moved to a new site in 1997, and Bakla Tepe Höyüğü (Bakla Tepe Mound) also ended up under the lake waters. As it is a drinking water basin, swimming and water sports are not allowed on the lake; the broad water surface can be viewed from the surrounding roads.
