Its story
İzzet Mehmet Paşa was a statesman from Safranbolu who served twice as grand vizier in the reign of Abdülhamid I and once in the reign of Selim III. The mosque was built between 1794 and 1798, during his last grand vizierate. The problem of the sloping ground, with groundwater flowing beneath it, was solved by raising the building and setting it on arches. The richly decorated minbar in the square-plan prayer hall bears the tughra of Selim III; the general appearance of the building recalls the Nuruosmaniye in Istanbul. With endowment shops, a library and şadırvans, it has the character of a small complex.
