Aktekke Mosque (Mader-i Mevlânâ)
Merkez, Karaman
A Mevlevi lodge mosque commissioned in 1370 by the Karamanid Alâeddin Bey, containing the grave of Rumi's mother Mümine Hatun.
Its story
Before settling in Konya, Rumi's (Mevlânâ's) family lived for a time in Larende, that is, Karaman; Rumi's mother Mümine Hatun died here. According to its inscription, the mosque was commissioned in 1370 by the Karamanid Alâeddin Bey and used as a Mevlevi lodge (Mevlevîhane); for this reason it is popularly called the Mader-i Mevlânâ (Mother of Rumi) Mosque. The building contains the sarcophagi of Mümine Hatun as well as Alâeddin Çelebi and Mevlevi sheikhs. The dervish cells, the graveyard (hazire) and the nearby hamam are parts of the complex. It is an important stop on the Karaman leg of the Şeb-i Arûs ceremonies.
