Karaman Castle
Merkez, Karaman
A Seljuk and Karamanid-period castle rising on the mound in the middle of the city, with its inner castle still standing; a wide view of the Karaman plain.
Its story
The castle consisted of outer, middle and inner walls encircling one another in rings; the inner castle is built on a mound bearing traces of the Bronze Age. The first known construction of the inner walls is dated to the time of Kılıç Arslan II, and that of the outer walls to the time of Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev I. In the Karamanid period the inner castle became the residence of the beys; in the Ottoman period the ruined castle was repaired with material from some buildings in the city. Today the whole of the inner castle and part of the middle wall are standing; from the area, turned into a park with landscaping, the city and the plain can be viewed, and it is illuminated in the evenings.
