Yunus Emre Mosque and Tomb
Merkez, Karaman
The tomb where, according to Karaman tradition, Yunus Emre rests, and the adjoining Karamanid-period mosque.
Its story
The group of buildings consisting of a mosque, tomb and tekke is dated to the Karamanid period, the 14th century. The tomb adjoining the west wall of the mosque contains four sarcophagi; according to the tradition in Karaman, these belong to Yunus Emre, his sheikh Taptuk Emre, Yunus's son İsmail and his daughter. The site of Yunus Emre's grave is claimed in many places in Anatolia; Karaman is one of the places making this claim. In Karaman, Yunus Emre commemoration events have been held together with the Turkish Language Festival since 1961. The park beside the mosque is one of the quiet corners of the city center.
