Its story
The building was built at the end of the 19th century, after Kars came under Russian rule in 1878, as the Alexander Nevsky Church (Cossack Church). In the early years of the Republic it was used by various public institutions; in 1953 its onion domes were removed and its bell tower demolished, and for a long time it served as an indoor sports hall. In the mid-1980s it was converted into a mosque with the addition of two minarets. Its tuff-stone facade in light and dark brown tones, its round-arched pediments and its triple-window arrangement make it one of the most distinctive examples of Russian-period religious architecture in Kars.
