Its story
The building, in the Kaleiçi neighborhood south of the castle, was built in the 930s as a church in memory of the Twelve Apostles, in the reign of the Bagratid king Abas I. After the region came under Seljuk rule in 1064, it was converted into a mosque; during the Russian administration it was used as a church again, and after 1918 it became a mosque once more. Serving as the Kars Museum between 1964 and 1978, the building has been used as a mosque again since 1993. With its body of dressed cut basalt, centrally planned and extended by four niches, and its dome with a conical roof, it is one of the region's striking medieval buildings.
