Kayseri Castle
Melikgazi, Kayseri
A castle in the very center of the city, founded in the Roman period and repaired in the Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods, known for its walls of dark volcanic stone.
Its story
The first information about the walls of Kayseri appears on coins from the time of the Roman Emperor Gordian III (238–244). The Byzantine historian Procopius reports that Justinian I made the city better protected in the 6th century by narrowing its wide walls. The castle later took its present form through repairs and additions in the Danishmendid, Seljuk, Dulkadirid, Karamanid and Ottoman periods. The structure, consisting of an inner and outer castle, has 18 bastions in total. The castle interior today houses the Kayseri Archaeology Museum and is intertwined with the city's historic bazaars.
