Kavaklı Village Mosque (Church of St. Basil)
Özvatan, Kayseri
A 19th-century church converted into a mosque in the village of Kavaklı in Özvatan, known for its monumental courtyard gate with a pediment and its bell tower with a marble bust of a woman.
Its story
The church is thought to have been built in the second half of the 19th century with a plan similar to the example in the village of Taşlık. The courtyard is entered through a monumental gate with a triangular pediment rising on marble bases; above the small inner door with white marble jambs stands the bell tower. The marble bust of a woman on the bell tower is the building's most striking decoration. The interior, divided into three aisles by four columns, is covered with barrel vaults, and to the east there is a semicircular apse projecting outward. A mihrab has been added to the south wall and a minaret to the west facade of the building, which is used as a mosque today.
