Kıyıköy (Midye) Castle
Vize, Kırklareli
The wall gates of ancient Salmydessos and Byzantine Midye, on the headland between the Pabuçdere and the Kazandere.
Its story
Kıyıköy is a Black Sea port town known in antiquity as Salmydessos and in the Byzantine and Ottoman periods as Midye. The town is built on a headland bounded by the Pabuçdere to the north and the Kazandere to the south, and is still entered through the gates of its Byzantine walls. After the Balkan War, the Ottoman border briefly ran through here as the 'Midye–Enez line'. With the harbor, streams and forest coming together, the town is ideal for exploring on foot.
