Hannibal Monument
Gebze, Kocaeli
A monument to the Carthaginian commander Hannibal in the area near ancient Libyssa where he is believed to have died.
Its story
The famous Carthaginian commander Hannibal, after his wars against Rome, took refuge with King Prusias of Bithynia. According to ancient sources, around 183 BC, to avoid being handed over to the Romans, he ended his life by taking poison at his house in Libyssa. Libyssa is thought to have been around today's Gebze; however, the exact location of the grave is unknown. The monument was built in a park in Gebze to commemorate this historical connection. A visit can be combined with a trip to Eskihisar and the Osman Hamdi Bey Museum.
