Karabali Mehmet Bey Mosque
Karamürsel, Kocaeli
The mosque of Kara Bali Bey's complex in Karamürsel, opened for worship in 1532 and reopened in 2019 after restoration by the General Directorate of Foundations.
Its story
The mosque's founder was Kara Balibey bin Ahmed, said to be descended from Şeyh Edebali; the building opened for worship in 1532. According to the endowment deed of 1575, Kara Bali Bey's complex included a mosque, a sebil (water fountain), a caravanserai, a school, a storehouse, shops and a bakery. Of these, only the mosque and the nearby hammam have survived. Faithfully restored by the General Directorate of Foundations over about two years, the mosque reopened for worship in March 2019. The hammam, repaired by the municipality, has not yet opened for use after being closed for a long time.
