Uzundere Wooden Mosque
Karamürsel, Kocaeli
A village mosque in Uzundere, Karamürsel, rebuilt in 1905, whose minbar, gallery and ceilings preserve wooden decoration in natural dyes.
Its story
The mosque was first built in 1888 by Mahmut, son of Şaban, an immigrant from Batumi. When it was badly damaged in the 1894 Istanbul earthquake, it was rebuilt on April 20, 1905 at the request of the villagers, immigrants of the '93 War, and the unfinished construction was completed on the instructions of Abdülhamid II. Although it has largely lost its original appearance because its exterior is plastered, the wooden decoration inside has been preserved. On the minbar, gallery, mihrab and ceilings, motifs such as tulips, palmettes, wildflowers, the crescent and star and the sun disc, made with appliqué, openwork, nailed and carved techniques, are worked in brown and green natural dyes. The building was registered by decision of the conservation board in 2017.
