Pertev Paşa (Yeni Cuma) Mosque
İzmit, Kocaeli
İzmit's most important Ottoman mosque, completed by Mimar Sinan in 1579 for the vizier Pertev Mehmed Paşa.
Its story
Also known as the Yeni Cuma Mosque, the building was constructed by Mimar Sinan for Pertev Mehmed Paşa, a vizier under Süleyman the Magnificent and Selim II, and completed in 1579. The single-domed mosque, with its large courtyard, ablution fountain and porticoes, bears the features of classical Ottoman architecture. Over time the complex grew with a madrasa, a hammam and fountains. Damaged in the 1999 earthquake, the mosque reopened for worship after an extensive restoration. It is close to the city's historic bazaar district.
