Its story
It is reported that construction of the walls surrounding Old Malatya (Battalgazi) began in the Roman period, continued under Constans in 363 and was completed in 532 in the time of Emperor Justinian. Records mention 95 towers and 11 gates; the moat was widened in 1060 and the walls repaired in 1102. In the 17th century Evliya Çelebi described the surroundings of the castle in his Seyahatname. Although the wall line is largely ruined today, the wall and tower remains rising here and there around the Ulu Mosque and the Silahtar Mustafa Paşa Caravanserai can be seen while touring the historic fabric of Old Malatya. Buildings such as the Ak Minare, the Sütlü Minare and the Ali Baba Namazgâhı are also just outside the wall line.
