Its story
The mosque was built around 1224, in the reign of the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Alâeddin Keykubad I; the inscription on the portal gives the architect as Yakub, son of Ebubekir of Malatya, and also records a repair in 1273-74. It is considered a rare example in Anatolia of the four-iwan plan tradition of the Great Seljuk mosques in Iran. The original parts are of brick; the stone sections are from later repairs. The turquoise and aubergine-purple tile mosaics with star and zigzag patterns inside the dome and on the arches are the building's most striking elements; its original wooden minbar is now in the Ankara Ethnography Museum. Damaged and taken under repair after the 2020 Sivrice earthquake, the building was heavily damaged in the earthquakes of 6 February 2023; scientific strengthening and restoration work coordinated by the General Directorate of Foundations is ongoing.
