Sardis Ancient City
Salihli, Manisa
The capital of the Lydian Kingdom; an ancient city added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2025 together with Bin Tepe.
Its story
Sardis, spread across both sides of the İzmir–Ankara road near the Sart neighborhood, was the capital of the Lydian Kingdom and became famous for its gold sources on the banks of the Paktolos (Sart Çayı). After the Lydians it became the seat of a Persian satrapy, then an important city of the region in the Hellenistic and Roman periods; it was rebuilt after the earthquake of AD 17. The bath-gymnasium complex and synagogue north of the road and the Temple of Artemis and acropolis to the south are separate visiting areas.
